EFOW, the European Federation of Origin Wines, welcomes the European Commission’s prompt response to the recommendations adopted by the High Level Group (HLG) on Wine on 17 December 2024. EFOW expresses its gratitude to Commissioner Hansen for his leadership in delivering a dedicated wine package to respond to the urgent needs and priorities of the sector.
The proposed targeted reform published today represents a good basis for discussion and demonstrates that the bottom-up approach adopted during the HLG is both effective and impactful.
EFOW considers that this proposal can be improved on a number of points. To that end, EFOW will work closely with the co-legislators to ensure the full implementation of the HLG recommendations.

The High Level Group has provided valuable recommendations, and it is essential that we uphold the consensus reached by Member States and stakeholders in that context. EFOW will actively engage with policymakers to promote amendments to the legislative package to secure the best possible policy changes for GI wine producers. We hope that the co-legislators will work on this proposal as a matter of priority with a view to delivering a positive legal framework for the wine sector as soon as possible ” stated Riccardo Ricci Curbastro, President of EFOW.
