Geographical Indications’ contribution to smart territorial development and sustainability.
Insights for GIs producers, policy makers, consumers and local communities.
GI SMART is a four-year research project designed to provide evidence-based recommendations to enhance the role of Geographical Indications (GIs) in fostering sustainable territorial development and achieving the objectives of the EU Farm to Fork strategy.
Objectives and Approach
GI SMART aims to strengthen the sustainability strategies of GI producers, ensure their recognition by consumers, and develop policy recommendations for an improved GI framework. The project will:
- Develop tools and methodologies to help GI producers implement sustainability strategies effectively.
- Establish a GI Smart Community Platform (at both EU and national levels) to engage stakeholders in participatory dialogue and the co-creation of research findings.
- Build a comprehensive and reproducible assessment method for sustainable GIs, covering environmental, social, economic, and governance dimensions.
- Identify and promote good practices that enhance the sustainability of GIs.
- Benchmark national and EU-level policies to improve policy frameworks.
- Improve consumer awareness and understanding of GI sustainability deliverables at both local and global levels.
- Deliver policy recommendations, decision-making tools, and best practices for policymakers and GI producers.
Key Deliverables
At the conclusion of the project, GI SMART will deliver:
- A Guide for GI Producer Groups, compiling effective sustainability practices and pathways to strengthen the economic, environmental, and social impact of GIs.
- A Guide for Policymakers, offering recommendations to develop a supportive policy framework that enhances GI sustainability at local, regional, national, and EU levels.
- A Guide for GI Marketing Strategies, helping producer groups and stakeholders improve the recognition, positioning, and value of GIs in the market.
By bridging research, policy, and practice, GI SMART will ensure that Geographical Indications remain a powerful tool for sustainable territorial development, benefiting producers, policymakers, consumers, and local communities alike.
